Thank you to Sterling Tanner (Lecturer of Trombone, Ohio State University) for his review of JOLO Duo’s Album: The Bounds of Spring in the most recent ITA Journal. He was very complimentary in regards to the playing on this album of both performers. One notable quote: “Setzer displays his virtuosity as a trombonist and musician throughout this album. Remarkable technical ability combined with stunning lyricism allows Setzer to depict unique, vivid musical imagery throughout each selection.”

Louis was recently featured in trombonist, Dr. Emmy Rozanski’s interview series: “Navigating Life After Music School: What Happens Next?” Dr. Rozanski has interviewed a wide range of musicians from across the field, to find out what steps they took to succeed in this business, and what advice they would give for the next generation of musicians.

2020

Louis is elated to join the music faculty at Northern Kentucky University as their new Lecturer in Low Brass starting in August 2020! He will miss his colleagues and students from Marian University, but he can’t wait to start his new adventure as a part of “Norse Nation!”

Thank you to Alison Young for her kind review of JOLO Duo’s Album, "The Bounds of Spring” in the latest edition of Harp Column.

“The Bounds of Spring is an elegiac collection that pairs harp with trombone. Louis Setzer’s savory and complex brass tone sings easily alongside the clear, ebullient ringing quality of Joseph Rebman’s tapestry of sound. Suave and with a bit of jocularity, the two avoid being too melancholy in Gideon Lewensohn’s Ostinato Malinconico, the trombone both singer and someone with a sense of humor.

Favorites include Sy Brandon’s Negotiations, a riff on the trials of intense longing and the stages one goes through in attaining something likely unattainable. The duo handles the mixed meter and varied moods with élan. Newly commissioned by Mack LaMont, Endless is a spirited journey through America and shows off this unusual duo to great effect.”

Catch Louis’ Faculty Recital “Alone with Trombone (from your home)” streaming live on facebook: April 26th at 2:00PM EST. You can find it streaming on the Marian University Bands or Lou Setzer Music Facebook artist pages.

This recital will feature works for trombone and media - streamed live from the Marian University Bandroom. Works by: Inez McComas, Brian Sadler, Raymond Premru, Ian Lester, Howard Buss, and David Wilborn. With (virtual) appearances by Richard Dole, Dr. Dan Kolan, plus a reunion of Dr. Christopher Brown and the Interstate Trombone Duo!

**If you missed the recital live, you can find it under the Videos section of the Lou Setzer Music Facebook Artist Page.

Louis is thrilled to once again perform on the Guest Artist Recital Series at the American Trombone Workshop, on Wednesday March 4th at 12:00 PM. He will be performing his arrangement of Four Songs from Robert Schumann’s Dichterliebe for trombone solo and trombone quartet accompaniment.
